ACHANAKMAR TIGER RESERVE - Chhattisgarh

Achanakmar tiger reserve is situated in the district of Bilaspur in Chhattisgarh. It is nestled quite close to the source of the Narmada River along the Maikal Ranges of Satpura hills. This tiger reserve is a part of the important Achanakmar-Amarkantak Biosphere Reserve. It also forms an integral part of the adjoining forest tract that constitutes the Central Indian tiger heartland. The reserve is linked through the hilly Kanha-Achanakmar Corridor to the famous Kanha tiger reserve. River Maniyari flows through this reserve.

Flora
Sal, saja, bija, haldu, tinsa, teak, bamboo, lendia, khamar and dhawara.

Fauna
Tiger is the flagship species here. As per the 2003 tiger census, there are about 26 tigers (11 female, 13males and 2 cubs).
Other animals found: Leopard, flying bison, Indian giant squirrel, chinkara, hyena, wild dog, chital, chousingha, crocodile, barking deer and wild pig.

Avian Fauna
Achanakmar tiger reserve is home to about 100 different species of winter migratory birds, including the Black capped Black bird.

Getting there
Raipur airport (about 170 km away) is the nearest aerodrome. The reserve is about 56 km away from the Bilaspur city, which in turn is well connected to major cities through State Highway 7, NH 11 and NH 200. The tiger reserve can be also reached from Bandhavgarh (225km afar), Amarkantak (21 km away) and Kanha, Mukki Gate (approximately 230 km away).
The closest railway stations are located at Bilaspur (approximately 56 km) and at Pendra Road (about 30 km) from the Kheochi gate.

Tourist information
The forest rest house provides quality accommodation to the visitors. Tourists can also stay at the beautiful Panther Cottage at Malhaar. There are about five watch towers situated in different areas of the reserve. Remember to take binoculars to view the birds closely.
