ADICHUNCHANAGIRI WILDLIFE SANCTUARY

Adichunchanagiri Wildlife Sanctuary is nestled along the Deccan Plateau in the state of Karnataka. It is also referred to as Adichunchanagiri Peacock Sanctuary. It was first declared as a wildlife sanctuary on 21 October 1981 and was again finally notified in 1999.

Flora
Forest type: tropical thorn forest, tropical dry deciduous forest, scrub forest and eucalyptus. Major trees: Ankola, Krishna Siris, East-Indian Vine, Tamarind, Jackal Jujube, Swallow-Root, etc.

Fauna
Feline, bonnet macaque, flying fox, striped palm squirrel, rabbit, bat, black naped hare, mongoose, spectacled cobra, southern house geeko, fan-throated lizard, etc.

Avian Faun
Important species: Peacock.
Yellow throated bulbul, grey partridge, white winged Black tit, short-toed eagle, Asiatic sparrow-hawk, white-eyed buzzard, booted hawk-eagle, cormorant, etc

Getting There
The nearest air and bus terminals to Adichunchanagiri Wildlife Sanctuary are located in Bangalore, which is about 115 km away. The road route to Adichunchanagiri sanctuary is: Bangalore-Nagmangala (90 km)-Nelligere- sanctuary (26 km). The closest railway station is situated at Mandya, around 65 km away.

Tourist Information Standard accommodation facilities can be found around the sanctuary. Safari rides, bird viewing, trekking and nature trail are popular activities of the wildlife freaks in the reserve. Safari rides in departmental jeep and bus are organised for the visitors by the forest authorities. It is always advisable for the tourists to be accompanied by guides during their excursions to the forest. Adichunchanagiri sanctuary also offers excellent trekking facilities for the adventure lovers. Chunchanagiri Temple and Pilgrimage centre is an important nearby tourist that is worth visiting. Avoid wearing heavy jewellery and strong perfumes during your visit to the sanctuary. Do not smoke and cook inside the sanctuary as it can lead to forest fires. Always respect the privacy and serenity of the wildlife and do not disturb it in any manner.
