ANSHI DANDELI TIGER RESERVE - Karnataka

Anshi Dandeli Tiger Reserve is nestled in the Western Ghats in the district of Uttara Kannada in Karnataka. The reserve comprises of Anshi National Park (about 339.866 sq km) and Dandeli Wildlife Sanctuary (approximately 475.018 sq km). River Kali and its tributaries Nagajhari and Kaneri flow through this protected area. The reserve is one of the important habitats of the endangered black panthers and rare Hornbill.

Flora
Various species of teak, bamboo, silver oak canes and climbers. Vegetation covers mainly comprises of mixture of evergreen and deciduous forest.

Fauna
As per the last census report of the forest official there are around 33 tigers in the region. Other animals found: Elephant, dhole, leopard, barking deer, wolf snake, mouse deer, ornate flying snake, gaur and sambar, skink, marsh crocodile, krait, monitor lizard, skittering frog.

Avian Fauna
Malabar Pied Hornbill, Malabar Grey Hornbill, Pompador Pigeon, Ceylon Frogmouth, Lesser Adjutant Stork, Emerald Dove, Paradise Fly Catcher and so on.

Getting there
The closest airport is at Dharwad (about 106 km). Other nearby airports are at Goa (150 km), Hubli (75 km) and Belgaum (110 km). Dandeli is well connected by regular bus and car services to and from Bangalore, Goa, Mumbai, Karwar, Hubli, Dharwad and Belgaum. Closest railway head are located at Alnavar (32 km), Dharwad (57 km), Londa (48 km), Karwar (117 km) and Hubli.

Tourist information
Accommodation facilities in and around Anshi Dandeli Tiger Reserve are quite limited. Visitors can avail dormitory or tent accommodation with prior reservations at nature camp which is situated at Kulgi. They can also opt to stay at Karwar and go for a day trip to the tiger reserve. Option for Jeep Safari with guide is provided inside the protected park. Visitors are adviced to wear dull coloured plain dresses that perfectly blend with the forest environment.
