Anshi National Park is nestled in the Uttara Kannada district of Karnataka. This national park is a
part of the Anshi Dandeli Tiger Reserve. It is situated in the Western Ghats on the Karwar-Londa
highway.
History of the park
This natural reserve was previously a part of the Dandeli Wildlife sanctuary in Kannada. However, in
September 1987, around 250 square kilometers of the sanctuary was carved to form the Anshi
National Park. Later in the year 2002, the park was further extended to incorporate 90 square
kilometers more.
Fauna
The park is one of the biggest reserves for Bengal tigers, Black panthers and Indian elephants in the
country. Other animal species of the park include Deer, Bonnet Macaque, Pangolin, Indian Bison,
Malabar Giant Squirrel, Malabar Civet, Sloth Bear, etc.
Avian-fauna
Birds such as Ashy Woodswallow, Adjutant Stork, Blue-headed Pitta, Broad-billed Roller, Brahminy
Kite, Golden-backed Woodpecker, etc. can be sighted here.
Flora
The endemic flora species of Anshi National Park include Malabar tamarind, Bintangur, Mulberry,
Flacourtia, Blackboard tree, Aini-maram, Teak, Silver oak, Bamboo, etc.
Getting there
The nearest airport is at Dharwad (about 106 km) and Belgaum (about 150 km) away. The nearest
railhead is at Karwar (about 60 km) and Dharwad. There are regular air, train and bus services from
Bangalore to Dharwad. From Dharwad one can board a local bus to reach Dandeli and then hire a
bus or jeep to reach the national park.
General information
There is no accommodation available for tourists inside the park. Certain nature camps are there
only for trekkers. Government guest houses, resorts and hotels are available in Dandeli. Trekking,
rafting, boating, canoeing are popular tourist activities in this area. Kadra Valley view point,
Karwar‘s Devbagh beach, Temple of Ulvi Channabasaveshwara are some of the popular
tourist spots near the national park.
