ARABITHITTU WILDLIFE SANCTUARY
Arabithittu Wildlife Sanctuary is located in the Karnataka state. Formerly the area was under the
management of the territorial jurisdiction and was referred to as Hunsur Territorial Range. However,
it was declared as a wildlife sanctuary on 30 April, 1985.
Flora
Forest type: Dry deciduous forest, tropical secondary scrub and eucalyptus
Major tree species: sandalwood, East Indian ebony, Indian-laurel, golden shower tree, anjan, fig,
amla, etc
Fauna
Leopard, spotted deer, fox, panther, wild pig, hare, porcupine, common mongoose, cobra, viper, rat
snakes, etc
Avian Fauna
Yellow-throated Bulbul, Black drongo, Peafowl, Mynas, Partridges, Owls, etc
How to Get There
The closest railway terminal to Arabithittu Wildlife Sanctuary is located at K R Nagar. The nearest
aerodrome is situated in Mysore city. From these terminals one can hire taxis or private vehicles to
reach the sanctuary. Regular buses ply between K R Nagar and Mysore.
Tourist Information
Forest guest houses and different other hotels and resorts are available for accommodation at
Hunsur Town and in Mysore. Camping facilities are available with prior permission from the forest
officials. The best time to spot the birds is during the early morning and late evening hours. Tickets
once purchased cannot be refunded. Watch towers have been erected in different points within the
protected reserve to enable the visitors to view the wildlife more closely.
