ASAN BRADGE BIRD SANCTUARY

Asan Bradge Bird Sanctuary, also known as Assan Barrage Bird Sanctuary, is situated on Dehradun-Paonta road about 40 km west of Dehradun, in the state of Uttarakhand. It is nestled at the meeting point of River Yamuna and Asan. This miniature man-made wetland was established in 1967. Due to its proximity to Dhalipur power, it is also referred to as Dhalipur Lake.

Flora
Terrestrial species: Sal, Jhingan, Axlewood, Red Silk Cotton Tree, Shisham, etc.
Marine species: Sago Pondweed, Elephant Grass, Water Hyacinth, Hornwort, etc.

Avian Species
Ruddy Shelduck, Coot, Eurasian Wigeon, Pintail, Common Teal, Red Crested Pochard, Lapwing, Herons, Egrets, Shoveller, Brahminy ducks, Ibises and many more.

Almost 250 avian fauna species can be spotted in the Asan Bradge reserve, out of which about 19 are winter migratory birds from Eurasia.

Getting There
Jolly Grant Airport, Dehradun is the closest airport. The nearest bus terminal and railway station are both located at Dehradun. From Dehradun one can easily hire a private vehicle or taxi to reach Asan Bradge Bird Sanctuary in about 50 minutes. This bird reserve can also be accessed by road from Chakrata (65 km), Kalsi (21.4 km) and Vikashnagar (approximately 11.6 km).

Tourist Information
Tourists can stay in the forest rest houses that are maintained by Uttarakhand forest department. Rampur Mandi Destination can also be availed for accommodation.

Visitors are advised to carry binoculars and mosquito repellents with them to enjoy bird watching clearly and comfortably. If visiting the sanctuary during the winter months, then remember to carry windcheater and proper woolen clothes.
