BARDA WILDLIFE SANCTUARY

Barda Wildlife Sanctuary is distributed in Porbandar and Jamnagar districts of Gujarat. Earlier, the sanctuary area used to be a private reserve of the ex-princely state of Jamnagar and Ranavav (Porbandar). Hence, till now it is also popularly referred to as Rana Barda and Jam Barda. Notification: Wildlife Sanctuary: 1979.

Flora
Forest type: Southern arid mixed deciduous forests, arid deciduous scrub, southern tropical forests, northern tropical thorn forest and patches of bamboo brakes
Trees: Babul, Jamun, Bamboo, Gorad, Rayan, Dhav, Ber, Amli, Dhudhlo, etc.

Fauna
Leopard, wild boar, hyena, jackal, wolf, blue bull, etc.
The Gujarat government had initiated the 'Gir-Barda Project' in 1979 to develop Barda sanctuary as the second habitat for the Asiatic lions after the Gir forest.

Avian fauna
Stolzca's Bushcat, Great Indian bustard, crested hawk eagle, spotted eagle, flamingos, painted sandgrouse, tawny eagles, and others.

Getting there
The closest airports to Barda Wildlife Sanctuary are located at Porbandar (approximately 20km) and Ahmedabad (about 415km). Porbandar railway station (about 15km) and Jamnagar railway station (about 100km) are the nearest railheads. The closest bus terminal is at Ranavav, about 8km away.

Tourist Information
Numerous budget guest houses and hotels are located around the sanctuary. The different streams, rivulets and dams within the sanctuary are the perfect place for wildlife spotting. Bird and animal spotting are popular tourist activities in the sanctuary.
Bileshwar Mahadev temple, Kirti Mandir, Kileshwar temple, Somnath temple, Porbandar Planetarium, Harsiddh Mata Temple, Gir National Park, etc are some of the important places of interest situated in the proximity of Barda sanctuary that are worth exploring.
