BHIMASHANKAR WILDLIFE SANCTUARY

Bhimashankar wildlife sanctuary is situated in the Ambegaon taluka of Pune District in Maharashtra. It is nestled along the Northern areas of the Western Ghats and is spread over three districts - Pune, Raigad and Thane. It was notified as a wildlife sanctuary on 10th October 1985 and is named after the Bhimashankar temple, situated inside the sanctuary. The sanctuary has been recognised by the Bird Life International as an important IBA (Important Bird Area).

Fauna
Leopards, Sambar, Wild boar, Barking deer, Hyena, Indian Pangolin, Malabar giant squirrels, etc.

Avian Fauna
Nilgiri Wood Pigeon, Greater Spotted Eagle, Southern Tree Pie, Small Sunbird, Malabar Pied Hornbill, Austen’s Babbler, Pallied Harrier, etc.

Reaching There
The closest airport and railway terminals are located at Pune, about 130 km away. Nearest bus stands are at Salgaon, Rajur, Peth, Junnar, Manchar (on Pune-Nasik highway) and Utchil. Another way is to drive down in a car from Mumbai to Bhimashankar wildlife sanctuary. It is about 7 hours journey and the route is Mumbai – Thane – Kalyan – Murbad – Malshej Ghat – Junnar – Ghodegaon – Dhimbhe Dam town – Bhimashankar. Alternatively, one can choose to trek from Karjat side, from the village of Khandas (about 36 km from Karjat station).

Tourist Information
Visitors can find accommodation at the forest rest house and at the M.T.D.C. suites, located close to the sanctuary. The tourists are advised to carry their own camping gears, mosquito repellents, binoculars, woolen clothes and dry snacks. Bird watching, camping, nature trails and trekking are major tourist activities in the region. Visitors are strictly prohibited from venturing inside the reserve after dusk.
Bhimashankar temple, Vanaspati Point, Nagphani Point, Gupt Bhimashankar and Bombay Point are important places to visit within the reserve. Jyotirlinga temple, Dimbhe dam, Bhorgiri caves, Hanuman Khada, etc are other places to visit.
