BHIMGAD WILDLIFE SANCTUARY

Bhimgad Wildlife Sanctuary is situated in Khanapur Taluk of Belgaum district in Karnataka. The sanctaury is nestled along the Western Ghats near Jamboti Village. It was gazetted a wildlife sanctuary on 01 December, 2011. This sanctuary is only one of the two habitats in the world of the near threatened Wroughton’s Free-tailed Bat. It is also a famous habitat of the endangered Lesser False Vampire Bat.
The sanctaury is named after Bhimgad Fort that was built by Shivaji in the 17 th century and is located inside the forest. Bhimgad Sanctuary is a crucial tiger corridor – one connecting the Dandeli and the Molem Wildlife Sanctuary and the other joining the Dandeli Wildlife Sanctuary and Radhanagri Wildlife Sanctuary in Maharashtra.

Flora
Tropical and subtropical wet broadleaf forests, medicinal plants and patches of grass lands.

Fauna
Important species: Tigers and the endangered Theobald Tomb Bat and Lesser False Vampire Bat. Other species: sambar, leopards, chital, wild dogs, elephant, gaur, foxes, king cobras, etc.

How To Get There
The closest railway station to Bhimgad Wildlife Sanctuary is at Belgaum (35 km). The nearest air terminals are located at Hubli (around 94 km) and Pune (approx. 335 km). Bus services to Bhimgad Sanctuary from Belgaum are quite irregular. Hence, it is always advisable to hire a taxi or private vehicle from Belgaum to reach the sanctuary.

Tourist Information
Accommodation options are available near the sanctuary. Entry permit from the chief conservator of the forest is required for entering the wildlife sanctuary. The visitors are advised to visit Bhimgad Sanctuary in groups of eight to ten members. Bird watching, trekking, natural trails and certain adventure sports are major past times of the visitors to this reserve. Wear light clothes, hats, sunglasses and comfortable shoes. Avoid wearing gold and other ornaments.
Theobald Tomb Bats can be found only in the Barapede caves. The Lesser False Vampire Bats can be found in caves near Talevadi. Jamboti forest, Vajrapoha falls, Bhimgad Fort, etc are some of the places of interest in and around the sanctaury that are worth visiting.
