BIR MOTIBAGH WILDLIFE SANCTUARY
Nestled on the Patiala-Dakala Road in the Patiala district of Punjab, Bir Motibagh Wildlife
Sanctuary used to be an important hunting reserve of the Patiala kings in the ancient times. It
was constituted as a Wildlife Sanctuary on 28 th February, 1952 as per the notification of the
PEPSU (Patiala and East Punjab State Union Government).
Flora
Vegetation covers: Dry deciduous forests and scrubs, dry grassland and medicinal herbs
Trees: Teak, Khajoor, Bamboo, Imli, Beri, Lasura, Drek, Jamun, Eucalyptus, Neem, Shisham,
Kikar, Karri, etc.
Fauna
Flagship Species: Deer.
Other species: Black buck, Hog deer, Jackal, Blue bull, Chital, Rhesus Monkeys, Wild boar, etc.
Avian Fauna
Red jungle fowl, Black and Grey Partridges, Quails, Peafowl, Brahminy Myna, etc.
German wild pig and Red jungle fowls were imported by the Patiala Maharaja to the sanctuary.
Getting there
The closest bus terminal and train station are located 6 km away from Bir Motibagh Wildlife
Sanctuary at Patiala. From Patiala, one can hire taxis and auto-rickshaws to reach the park.
Chandigarh Airport is the nearest airport, about 63 km away.
Tourist Information
There are hardly any staying facilities inside the sanctuary. However, tourists can find quality
accommodation at the hotels, rest houses and resorts in Patiala.
The sanctuary houses a deer park which is a must-see spot for all visitors. Darbar Hall and
Museum, Museum of Armoury, Kali Temple, Motibagh Palace, Baradari Garden and Chandeliers
are some of important places of interest for the tourists close to the sanctuary.
