BONDLA WILDLIFE SANCTUARY
Bondla wildlife sanctuary is situated in the Ponda taluka of Goa. It is nestled at the foothills of
the Western Ghats.
Flora
Vegetation covers: Moist Deciduous Forests, smaller stretches of evergreen forests and Canes.
Trees: Rosewood, jamba, lagerstroemia, kindall, entada, saraca indica, mimusops, bambusa
arundinacea and jamba
Flagship Trees: Matti (State tree).
Fauna
Leopards, sloth bear, monkeys, panther, malabar giant squirrel, wild boar, flying lizard, spotted
deer, barking deer, porcupines, pythons, crocodiles, etc.
Flagship Fauna: Gaur (state animal).
Avian Fauna
Brown fish owl, Peacocks, Golden Backed Woodpecker, Oriental dwarf kingfisher, Common Grey
Hornbill and Indian scimitar babbler.
Flagship bird: Ruby throated yellow bulbul (state bird).
Getting there
The closest railway station to Bondla wildlife sanctuary is the Margao (36 km). Panaji (about
52 km away) is the adjoining bus terminal. Dabolim Airport (about 50 km) is the nearest airport
to the sanctuary.
Tourist Information
Two dormitories and some eco-tourism cottages of the forest department are available for
accommodation with prior reservation through the main Forest Office (Panaji) or through the
Bondla Range Forest Office.
The sanctuary houses Botanic Gardens, Deer Safari Park, Mini Zoo, Formal Gardens and Nature
Education Centre that are must-see spots for the visitors. Natural trails, deer safaris, bird-
watching and elephant rides are popular activities within the sanctuary. Elephant rides are
offered around 4pm. The best time for visiting the sanctuary are during the evening and early
morning.
