Lord Gautama Buddha
Lord Goutam Buddha was the founder of the Buddhism religion. He was a spiritual preacher of ancient
India. The exact time of his birth and death are not known to the historians. However, it is believed that
Lord Buddha lived from 563 BC to 483 BC.
He was born in Kapilavastu (now in Nepal) at Lumbini forest. His mother Queen Maha Maya (Mayadevi)
died during his birth. His father’s name was King Suddhodan. After his mother’s death during his birth,
Lord Buddha was brought up by Maha Pajapati, his mother’s sister. His family name was Goutama but
his childhood name was Siddhartha. When he was 16 years old he got married to Yasodhara, who was
his distant cousin. They gave birth to a son named Rahula.
As a prince he had everything in the world that anyone could ask for. However, he was not happy and
felt that he lacked something important in life. At the age of 29 years he left his place to find answer to
his questions on life.
For many years he led a life of a mendicant. Goutam attained enlightenment in Bodh Gaya after sitting
for some days under a pipal tree (now known as Bodhi Tree). Thereafter, his followers began to call him
the ‘Buddha’ or ‘the Awakened One’.
He understood the reasons for the human sufferings and discovered steps to overcome them. These
discoveries were later hailed as the ‘Four Noble Truths’. These truths are the ways to reach the state of
Nirvana’ or supreme liberation. According to the Buddhist scriptures, Lord Goutam Buddha succeeded in
reaching the final deathless state or the ‘Parinirvana’ at the age of 80.
