Buddha Gautama
Lord Gautama Buddha was the founder of the Buddhism religion. He was a spiritual preacher
of ancient India. The exact time of his birth and death are not known to the historians.
However, it is believed that Lord Buddha lived from 563 BC to 483 BC.
He was born in Kapilavastu (now in Nepal) at Lumbini forest. His mother Queen Maha Maya
(Mayadevi) died during his birth. His father’s name was King Suddhodan. After his mother
died, Lord Buddha was brought up by Maha Pajapati, his mother’s sister. His family name
was Gautama but his childhood name was Siddhartha. When he was 16 years old he got
married to Yasodhara, who was his distant cousin. They had a son by the name Rahula.
As a prince he had everything in the world that anyone could ask for. However, he was not
happy and felt that he lacked something important in life. At the age of 29 he left his palace
to find the answer to his questions on life.
For many years he led a life of a mendicant. Gautama attained enlightenment in Bodh Gaya
after sitting for some days under a peepal tree (now known as Bodhi tree). Thereafter, he
was called ‘Buddha’ or the ‘Awakened One’ by his followers.
He understood the reasons for human sufferings and discovered steps to overcome them.
These discoveries were later called the ‘Four Noble Truths’. These truths are the ways to
reach the state of ‘Nirvana’ or supreme liberation. According to the Buddhist scriptures, Lord
Gautama Buddha succeeded in reaching the final deathless state or the ‘Parinirvana’ at the
age of 80.
