CAUVERY WILDLIFE SANCTUARY

Nestled along the banks of Cauvery River, Cauvery Wildlife Sanctuary is believed to be a crucial corridor for movement of elephants from Karnataka to Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh. It is spread over Mandya, Ramanagar and Chamarajanagar districts of Karnataka. The sanctuary is named after the Cauvery River.

Notifications: Wildlife Sanctuary on 14th January 1987.

Flora
Forest type: Riverine and deciduous forests.
Major species: Oil cake tree, bitter albizia, anjan, arjuna, tamarind, jamun, etc.

Fauna
Flagship species: four-horned antelopes, grizzled giant squirrel and Deccan Mahsheer (fish). Other species: Indian Elephant, Sambar, Gaur, Sloth bear, Indian porcupine, Panthers, Common mongoose, Vine snake, Wolf snake, Common otter, Marsh crocodile and others.
Of late tigers have been spotted in the MM Hills Reserve Forest area.

Avian Fauna
Green-billed malkoha, crested serpent eagle, Sirkeer cuckoo, Pigmy woodpecker, White-browed bulbul, White naped tit, etc.

Getting there
The closest railway station and airport to Cauvery Wildlife Sanctuary is in Bangalore, about 100km away. From Bangalore one can easily hire government or private buses to reach the sanctuary.

Tourist Information
Bheemeshwari Fishing Camp, located within the sanctuary offers comfortable stay to the visitors. One can find many other accommodation facilities in Bangalore and in the nearby towns of the sanctuary.
Trekking, river rafting along the Cauvery River and angling are popular tourist activities here. Many temples located in the proximity of Cauvery sanctuary are important archeological and tourist spots.
