CHANDAKA DAMPARA WILDLIFE SANCTUARY
Chandaka Dampara Wildlife Sanctuary is located in Odisha towards the north-western border of
Bhubaneswar.
Notification: Elephant Reserve in 1982.
Flora
Forest type: moist Kangada forests, coastal Sal forests, moist miscellaneous semi-evergreen forests
mixed with bamboo brakes.
Trees: Sal, Teak, Kalicha, Sunari, etc.
Medicinal plants: Thalkudi, Indrajaba, Guluchi lata, Duramari, etc.
Fauna
Flagship species: Elephants
Other species: Hyena, Leopards, Barking Deer, Jackal, Bengal Monitor lizard, Rock python, Common
vine snake, crocodiles and others.
Avian Fauna
Resident birds: Crested serpent eagle, red wattled Lapwings, white breasted Waterhen, etc.
Migratory birds: Pond Heron, Cormorants, white eyed Pochard, Bramhiny Duck and others.
Getting there
The closest airport and railway station to Chandaka Dampara Wildlife Sanctuary are located in
Bhubaneswar (approximately 20km). From these terminals visitors can hire cars or autos to reach
the Deras Gate (about 25km) of the sanctuary. Kolkata-Chennai Highway (NH-5) passes close to the
Chandaka Dampara Sanctuary.
Tourist Information
Tourists can find quality accommodation near the Deras Gate. Rest houses at Ambilo and
Kumarkhunti can be availed for staying. Rest houses at Kumarkhunti and Ambilo have watch towers.
The other important entrance to the sanctuary is the Godibari gate. Watch towers are constructed in
different spots within the reserve to enable visitors to view the wildlife in their natural habitat. Only
the vehicles of the forest department staff and the residing tribes are allowed inside the park.
Wildlife and bird spotting within the sanctuary has to be done on foot.
Charchika temple, Atri hot spring, Chudanga gada fort, Bualigada fort, Nandankanan Zoological
Park, etc are famous places of interest close to Chandaka Dampara Sanctuary.
