CHAPRALA WILDLIFE SANCTUARY

Chaprala Wildlife Sanctuary is nestled along the banks of confluence of Wainganga and Wardha rivers, in the Chandrapu district of Maharashtra. It was established in 1986. The perennial Pranhita River forms its western border and Pedigundam range of Allapalli forest division forms its eastern, southern and northern boundary.

Flora
Flora type: mostly southern tropical dry deciduous forests with patches of grasslands. Major tree: teak, salai, arjun, mahua, bel, ghoti, tendu, sisoo, dhawada, semalshisham, surya, etc.

Fauna
Flagship species: Giant Indian squirrel
Other species: tiger, sambar, jackal, spotted deer, panther, black buck, sloth bear, barking deer, bush feline, Indian python and Indian monitor.

Avian Fauna
The sanctuary is home to about 131 types of birds which include peacock, bush fowl, myna, etc.

Reaching There
Nearest railway station to Chaprala Wildlife Sanctuary is about 70km away at Ballarpur. Nagpur airport, about 243km away, is the closest airport. Nearest bus stands are at Ballarpur (70km) and Chandrapur (85km). The road from Allapalli to Chadrapur passes through the Chaprala sanctuary.

Tourist Information
Accommodation can be availed at the forest guest house at Chaprala with prior booking. Tourists can also choose to stay in hotels, resorts and guest houses at Chandrapur. Trekking, camping, natural trail are major tourist activities. It is always advisable for the visitors to avoid visiting the sanctuary during the monsoon season. The best places to spot the wild animals and birds are near the water bodies of the sanctuary which include Sitabodi Lake, Ankhoda Lake, Lagam Lake and Urshikuta Lake. Swimming, fishing and boating in the forest water bodies are strictly prohibited. Kaleshwar Mandir, Markandeshwar Mandir, Hatti Camp, Sironcha and Kolamarka wild buffalo sanctuary are popular places to visit around the sanctuary. Tourists can also visit the settlements of the Gond Tribal, located within the reserve.
