CHAPRAMARI WILDLIFE SANCTUARY

Chapramari Wildlife Sanctuary is situated in the Nagrakata block of Jalpaiguri district in West Bengal. It is nestled on the plain land of the Dooars and is located on the north-eastern side of the river Murti. It was notified as a wildlife sanctuary in 1998.

Vegetation type: Dry Mixed Forest and orchids

Important species: Indian Elephant and Royal Bengal Tiger. Other species: Indian Bison, Sambar, Leopard, Cheetal, Barking Deer, Pangolin, etc

Migratory species: Teals, Brahminy,
Other species: Indian Treepie, Green Magpie, Hill Mayna, Large Grey Headed Fishing Eagle, Green pigeon, Bee-eater, etc

Reaching There
The nearest major railway station to Chapramari Wildlife Sanctuary is at New Jalpaiguri railway station, about 70 km away. The other small railway terminals are located at Malbazar 7 km and Chalsa around 10 km. The closest airport is at Bagdogra. The wildlife sanctuary is located close to the National Highway 31 and can be easily reached from Jalpaiguri (70 km), Siliguri (72 km), Lataguri (26 km) and Chalsa. Most visitors prefer to get down at Bagdogra or New Jalpaiguri and hire a taxi or vehicle to reach Chapramari sanctuary.

Tourist Information
Forest bungalow located within the sanctuary on the bank of river can be availed for accommodation with prior booking. The tourists can also opt to stay in four cottages of WBFDC Ltd., located at Chapramari Camp of Panjhora and Murti. Different private lodges, resorts and hotels are available at Chalsa and Lataguri.

An observation tower is situated in the sanctuary from where the visitors can have a bird’s eye view of the entire forest. Wildlife photography, nature trail and bird sightings are popular tourist activities in the region. Hila and Jiti tea gardens, Jaldapara forest and Gorumara National Park are some nearby tourist destinations.
