CHILIKA BIRD SANCTUARY
Located in the south-west direction of Puri in the state of Odisha, Chilka Lake is considered to be the
largest inland salt-water lagoon in Asia. Situated on this famous lake, Chilika Bird Sanctuary is the
real paradise for the ornithologists.
Flora
Waterweeds, Eichhornia, Halophila ovalis, Hydrilla, Excoecaria agalloch, Capparis roxburghii,
Pongamia pinnata, etc.
Fauna
Chilka dolphins, spotted deer, golden jackals, hyenas, Indian Porcupine, blackbuck, etc.
Avian Fauna
White bellied sea eagles, flamingos, Asian Dowitcher, purple moorhen, graylag geese and many
more.
As per the 2005 bird census report, nearly nine lakh migratory birds visit this sanctuary every year
during the winter. The most popular are the migratory birds from Siberia.
Getting There
The closest airport to the Chilika Bird Sanctuary is at Bhubaneswar (about 120km away). The
nearest railway station and bus terminal are located at Balugaon. The state run OSRTC buses
regularly ply to and from Cuttack and Bhubaneswar to Balugaon. By road the sanctuary can also be
accessed from Puri.
Tourist Information
The tourists can find quality accommodation at the OTDC (Orissa Tourism Development Corporation)
hotel, tourist bungalow and other private rest houses, hotels and lodges situated along the banks of
Chilika Lake.
Entry permit can be secured from the Divisional Forest Officer or from the Wildlife Office (Balugaon).
Rambha, Barkul and Satpada are the entry points to the sanctuary.
There are no jeep safaris within the forest areas. Cruising is the best way to view the sanctuary.
Different state and private launches and country boats can be hired at reasonable rates at Satpada,
Rambha, Barkul and Balugaon. However, power boats are prohibited inside the sanctuary lake.
Carry binoculars, birds’ guide book and packed food along with you during your aquatic safari.
Chances of sighting Chilka dolphins are more at Satapada.
