CHIMMONY WILDLIFE SANCTUARY

Established in the year 1984, Chimmony Wildlife Sanctuary is located in Thrissur district’s Mukundapuram Taluk in the state of Kerala. The sanctuary is named after River Chimony that flows through it.

Flora
Vegetation covers: Southern Indian moist deciduous forest, West Coast semi-evergreen forest and West Coast tropical evergreen forest.
Trees: white pine, pathiri, pali, narakom, vetti, kara, white akil, marotti, anjili, etc.

Fauna
Tiger, leopard, wild bison, gaur, wild pigs, bear, great squirrel, etc.
The sanctuary is an important habitat of the rare Atlas Moth, which is believed to be the world’s largest moth.

Avian fauna
Indian rufous babbler, grey headed bulbul, lesser fish eagle and many more.

Getting There
Closest railway terminal and bus station to Chimmony Wildlife Sanctuary are located at Thrissur town (about 35 km away). Cochin International Airport located at a distance of about 60 km is the nearest airport. The visitors can hire buses and other private vehicles from Thrissur to reach the sanctuary.

Tourist Information
Staying options are available at the Inspection Bunglow, located close to the Chimmony Dam, against advance booking with the Assistant Wild Life Warden. Alternatively one can find accommodation at tents and huts at Mulapara, Thottupara and Anaporu with prior bookings. The tourists can secure Visit Permits from the Divisional Forest Officer, stationed at Thrissur. Boating (particularly Bamboo rafting), trekking, nature trails, orchid walk and bird watching are popular tourist activities out here.
