CHURDHAR WILDLIFE SANCTUARY

Churdhar Wildlife Sanctuary is located on the Churdhar Peak in the state of Himachal Pradesh. It was established in 1985 and was named after the Churdhar Peak.

Flora
Forest type: temperate forest, western mixed coniferous forest, kharsu oak forest and alpine pastures.
Trees and medicinal herbs: deodar, oak, Chulai, Wild Himalayan Cherry, Aloe vera, etc.
Fauna
Snow leopard, barking deer, reindeers, goral, ass, wild boar, Asiatic black bear and pika

Avian Fauna
Indian peafowl, red Himalayan monal, variegated laughing thrush, koklass pheasant, jungle fowl, etc.

Getting there
The closet airport is at Jubbarhattithat, approximately 23km away from Shimla. Shimla to Kalka is the nearest narrow gauge line on which toy trains run. This journey is quite pleasant and rejuvenating. Local state transport buses, taxis and private vehicles can be hired from the nearby important towns and cities of the state to reach Churdhar Wildlife Sanctuary.

Tourist Information
Rest houses at Choras, Nohra and Sarain are available for accommodation to the tourists. Alternatively, one can also stay at Churdhar where they can find different hotels, resorts and lodges to stay.
Entry to the sanctuary is not strictly monitored. So visitors can enter this forest reserve freely. However, the tourists are expected to follow and abide by the rules and regulations of the sanctuary.
Trekking, wildlife photography and nature trail are important tourist activities here. Trekking routes from Sarain, Nohra and Pulbahal to the sanctuary are quite adventurous and enjoyable. The perennial rivers of the sanctuary are the best places to spot the birds and the wild animals.
Lord Shirgul Maharaj, a big effigy of Lord Shiva atop Churu Peak, is worth visiting.
