CORINGA WILDLIFE SANCTUARY

Nestled in the East Godavari district of Andhra Pradesh, in the vicinity of Kakinada port, Coringa Wildlife Sanctuary is believed to be the second largest existing stretch of mangrove forests in the country. It was set in the year 1978 and is a part of the Godavari estuary. It is situated on the deltaic branches of Godavari and Gouthami Rivers along the Bay of Bengal. Almost half of the sanctuary’s area is filled with backwater, which consist of 18 km sand pit.

Flora
Avicennia marina, Bruguiera gymnorrhiza, Aegiceras corniculatum, Hibiscus tiliaceus, Rhizophora conjugata, Derris trifoliata, Aeluropus lagopoides, Suaeda maritima, etc. Forest covers: widespread dry deciduous tropical and mangrove forest.

Fauna
Smooth-coated otter, Estuarine Crocodile, Fishing Cat Golden Jackal, Molluscs, Mudskippers, Olive Ridley sea turtle, etc.

Avian Fauna
White-backed Vulture, Spot-billed Pelican, Little Stint, Oriental White Ibis, Pied Kingfisher, Sea Gulls, Oriental White Ibis, etc.

Getting there
Closest railway station is at Kakinada (about 20 km) and the nearest airport is at Rajahmundry (about 70 km). Coringa Wildlife Sanctuary is well connected through regular bus services to Kakinada and Rajahmundry.

Tourist Information
Forest Rest Houses at Rajhmundry and Kakinada provide comfortable lodging facilities to the tourists.
