DAMPA TIGER RESERVE - Mizoram
Dampa Tiger Reserve is located at the Manit District in the western region of Mizoram. It is nestled at
the intersection of the borders of Tripura, Mizoram and Bangladesh. The reserve covers an area of about
550 sq km.
About the reserve
The reserve was earlier used for slash-and-burn shifting-jhum cultivation during the 1950s. It is named after a village which was also known as Dampa and existed long back.

Canes, Bamboos and Orchids.
Fauna
Mammals: Tiger, Clouded Leopard, Hoolock gibbon, Indian Bison, Rhesus Macaque, Otter, Black Bear, etc. Due to poaching the population of tiger has receded a bit in the recent years. Reptiles: King Cobra, Monitor lizard, Hill Tortoise and so on.
Avian Fauna
Malabar pied hornbill, Red jungle fowl, Great Indian hornbill, Hill myna, etc.
Getting there
The closest airport is at Lengpui about 70 km. The nearest bus terminals are located at Aizawl (about 127 km afar) and Silchar (about 180 km away). The closest railhead is at Silchar.
Tourist information
Forest guesthouses at Rengpui and Dampa can be availed for accommodation. Other accommodation facilities are available at Phuldungsei, Teirei or Damparengpui. Every individual, except Government employees, needs to obtain the Inner Line pass for entering Mizoram, from the Liaison Officer, Government of Mizoram, stationed at Kolkata or Silchar. Certain sites in Dampa Tiger Reserve are breeding grounds for the malaria mosquitoes. Hence, it is always advisable for visitors to take Anti- malarial prophylactics before entering the reserve. Do not disturb the tranquility and serenity of the forest by indulging in loud music and loud conversations. Avoid plucking or damaging the flora of the area. Do not pollute the environment by littering or urinating anywhere in the reserve. Wear khaki, olive green or dark green clothes to easily blend with the surroundings.
