DANDELI WILDLIFE SANCTUARY
Established in the year 1956, Dandeli Wildlife Sanctuary is believed to be the second largest
wildlife sanctuary in the state of Karnataka. It is situated in the proximity of Mahaveer
sanctuary in Goa. Dandeli sanctuary is about 480 km from Bangalore and 145 km from Goa.
Flora
Forest covers: semi evergreen and moist deciduous forests with patches of evergreen forest.
Trees and plants: Teak, bamboo, etc.
Fauna
Flagship species: crocodile
Other species: tigers, gaur, leopards, antelopes, black panthers, mouse deer, elephants, civet
cats, langurs, giant flying squirrels, etc.
Avian fauna
Great pied hornbill, golden-backed woodpecker, white breasted kingfisher, Malabar pied
hornbill, grey hornbill, etc.
Getting There
Closest railheads are located at Londa, Hubli and Dharwad. Nearest airports to Dandeli wildlife
sanctuary are at Belgaum, Goa and Hubli. Dandeli city has its own bus terminal which is well
connected with Goa, Bangalore, Karwar, Belgaum, Dharwad and Hubli by regular bus services.
Tourist Information
Accommodation is available in furnished cottages and tents within the sanctuary. Jungle safaris,
coracle boat rides, crocodile sightings, bird watching, nature walks and trekking are main
activities in the sanctuary. The tourists are always advised to be accompanied by guides during
safari and trekking expeditions.
Skyes Point, Vantage Point, Supa Dam, Vincholi Rapids, Ulavi Channabasaveshwara temple,
Kavala Caves, Syntheri Rocks, etc are some of the popular tourist spots in the adjoining areas of
Dandeli sanctuary.
