DARANGHATI WILDLIFE SANCTUARY
Daranghati Wildlife Sanctuary is nestled in the northern (Manglad Gad) and southern (Nogli Gad)
sides of the Dhauladhar mountain range in the state of Himachal Pradesh. Previously this sanctuary
used to be a game reserve of the Raja of Bushah.
Notification: Wildlife sanctuary in March 1962.
Flora
Forest type: sub tropical broadleaf forest, sub alpine forest, alpine moist scrub forests and alpine
moist pasture.
Trees: silver fir, spruce, Himalayan yew, oak, blue pine, plum, cherry, almond and pear.
Fauna
Asiatic black bear, brown bear, leopard, Himalayan weasel, Himalayan tahr, yellow-throated marten,
Himalayan blue sheep, ibex, Special Black Cobra, etc.
Avian Fauna
Western tragopan, koklas, Himalayan monal, Snowcock, kaleej and others.
Getting there
The closest major transport centre to Daranghati Wildlife Sanctuary is at Sarahan, approximately
177 km away from Shimla.
The closest railway station is at Shimla. From Kalka one can board a toy train to Shimla and then hire
bus or private vehicle to Sarahan.
The nearest airport is at located almost 23 km away from Shimla at Jubbarhatti.
Tourist information
Tourists can find accommodation at the PWD rest house situated at Daranghati against advance
booking. Alternatively one can stay in the tented accommodation provided close to the rest house.
The hilly and undulating topography of Daranghati sanctuary is the trekkers’ delight. Shimla to
Daranghati via Nakranda, Baggi, Sungri, Taklech and Kareri; Daranghati from Sarahan; and along the
old silk route are some of the most popular trekking routes of the sanctuary.
For any query or guidance, the visitors can seek assistance from the forest staff stationed at Dofda
and Sarahan. Several wooden temples situated around the sanctuary are worth visiting.
