DHAULADHAR WILDLIFE SANCTUARY

Dhauladhar Wildlife Sanctuary is a high altitude forest which is nestled between Nurpur and Jogindernagar in the state of Himachal Pradesh. It was first notified as a wildlife sanctuary in the year 1994 and then finally on 01.11.1999.

Flora
Vegetation type: western mixed coniferous forest, alpine pastures and rhododendron Major tree species: deodar, blue pine, oak, fir, spruce, etc

Fauna
Leopard, Sambar, Red Fox, Deer, Himalayan Black Beer, Musk Deer, Himalayan Weasel, Serow, Himalayan Ibex, Himalayan Palm Civet, etc

Avian Fauna
Cheer Pheasant, Himalayan Woodpecker, Speckled Wood-Pigeon, Himalayan Tree Creeper, gold-billed Magpie, Himalayan Tree Pie, Himalayan Slaty Headed Parakeet, Black Bulbul, White cheeked Bulbul, etc

How to Get There
Closest airport is at Shimla, about 50 km away. Nearest railway station is at Jogindernagar. The road route to Dhauladhar Wildlife Sanctuary from Chandigarh is Chandigarh-Palampur-Baijnath- (on foot) sanctuary. From Shimla the road route is Shimla-Mandi-Barot (near the sanctuary).

Tourist Information
Comfortable accommodations can be availed at forest rest houses at Bir, Multan, Bara Bhangal and Swar. One can also opt to stay at Forest Inspection Hut at Raj Gundha. Bird and animal viewing, trekking, paragliding and trout fishing are popular past times of the tourists in the forest. The hilly terrain of Dhauladhar Sanctuary offers excellent opportunity for trekkers. Bir-Billing-Raj Gundha (26 km); Panhartu-Thamsar Maeh–Udak-Bara Bhangal (19 km); Raj Gundha-Palachal-Panhartu (16 km); Bara Bhangai-Khanar-Dharari–Naya gran (42km), etc are some of the eco-trek trails within the sanctuary. Always wear comfortable clothes with shades that easily blend with the forest environment. Carry enough provision of food and water during your visit.

A mini zoo, called Gopalpur Zoo, is located inside the wildlife sanctuary and is worth visiting. Thamsar Lake and Thamsar pass are nearby places of interest for the tourists.
