DIFFERENT WILDLIFE SANCTUARIES

Paget Island Wildlife Sanctuary is a famous wildlife sanctuary of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands located in Paget Island. It is one of the safe havens for different species of migratory birds in the country and is also a popular paradise for the bird lovers. The area coverage of the sanctuary is about 7.36 sq. km. and it was established in the year 1987. The flora mostly comprises mangrove trees. The visitors can reach the sanctuary by availing boat services from Port Blair.

Ross Island Wildlife Sanctuary
Ross Island Wildlife Sanctuary is situated in Andaman and Nicobar Islands, nearly 2 km from Port Blair. It is home to several beautiful flora and fauna. It was established in the year 1987 and its area is about 1.01 sq. km. The sanctuary can be reached by fibre boats from Water Sports Complex. Tourists are not allowed to enter the island in wooden boats (dungis). Only fibre boats are allowed for reaching the island. The tourist can also visit the nearby Mangroves creeks and the northernmost islands (situated near the Near Coco Island) in the same fibre boats. The visitors can visit a small museum that is located close to the sanctuary. This museum is under the management of the Indian Navy. Special permission is required to be obtained from the Indian Navy for entering the Ross Island Wildlife Sanctuary. There are no overnight staying facilities within the sanctuary.

Sir Hugh Rose Island Wildlife Sanctuary
Sir Hugh Rose Island Wildlife Sanctuary is situated at the southern tip of Neil Island and is commonly referred to as ‘Chhota’ Neil (or Small Neil). The sanctuary is basically a turtle-nesting ground. The sanctuary was set-up in the year 1987. It is spread over an area of about 1.06 sq. km. Different hotels are available near the island. Neil Island is the only getaway to Sir Hugh Rose Island Sanctuary. Special entry permit for entering the sanctuary has to be secured from the Deputy Range Officer, Forest Department at Neil Island.

South Brother Island Wildlife Sanctuary
South Brother Island Wildlife Sanctuary is located in the South Brother Island, which is situated in the Duncan Passage, nearly 9.5 km. northeast of Little Andaman Island. The island is a portion of the South Andaman district and is about 15 km from the town of Obate. South Brother Island Sanctuary was established in the 1987 and is approximately 1.24 sq. km. Sea turtle is the prime fauna in the region.

South Sentinel Island Wildlife Sanctuary
South Sentinel Island Wildlife Sanctuary is situated about 59.6 km south of North Sentinel Island and about 26.5 km west of the north-west Little Andaman Island. The sanctuary was established in the year 1977 and covers an area of about 1.61 sq. km. It is basically a forested coral reef and is continuous with the corals encircling it. It houses an unmanned lighthouse and is completely uninhabited. However, due to its novelty factor and remoteness, the sanctuary is used for diving expeditions. There are no accommodation facilities within the sanctuary. From Port Blair the visitors can hire a boat to reach South Sentinel Island Wildlife Sanctuary.

Spike Island Wildlife Sanctuary
Spike Island Wildlife Sanctuary is situated in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. It is spread over an area of about 211.7 sq. km. The sanctuary is famous among the tourists for its greenery and exotic wildlife. It can be easily reached from Port Blair by hiring a boat. Always carry enough food and water while visiting the island. Do not venture into unknown paths but follow the instructions of your guide. The ideal time to visit the sanctuary is during the winter months when the climate is good and pleasant.
