Dipor Bil Wildlife Sanctuary

Dipor Bil Wildlife Sanctuary is located at Kamrup district in Assam. It is a permanent freshwater lake in one of the Brahmaputra River’s former channel. The sanctuary is also referred to as Deepor Beel Wildlife Sanctuary and was gazetted a wildlife sanctuary in 1989. In November 2002, the wildlife sanctuary was recognised as a wetland under the Ramsar Convention. It has also been declared as an Important Bird Area (IBA) with extreme priority for conservation.
Previously, Deepor Beel Wildlife Sanctuary was an important dockyard of the Tai-Ahom and the Mughal dynasty. ‘Deepor’ in Sanskrit means 'Dipa', meaning Elephant and Beel in Assamese language means wetland.

Flora
Vegetation cover: mostly aquatic and semi aquatic plants
Major trees: Mango, tamarind, Indian laburnum, Golden Bamboo, silk-cotton, tall albizia, siris, etc.
Aquatic plant species: Water chestnut, water lilies, water hyacinth, water cabbage, etc.

Fauna
Wild Asian elephants, barking deer, leopard, sambar, jungle cat, Chinese porcupine, turtle, tortoise, cobra, viper, etc.

Avian Fauna
Great Spot Billed Pelican, Lesser Adjutant Stork, Hornbills, Palla’s sea Eagle, Peafowl, Water-Fowl, etc.

How To Reach There
Dipor Bil Wildlife Sanctuary is nestled on NH-31 and can be easily approached by roadways from different parts of Assam. The closest major bus stop is the Basistha Chariali Bus Stand in Guwahati. Nearest railway terminal is at Guwahati about 20 km away. Guwahati Airport, around 15 km away is the closest airport. One can easily hire taxis, vehicles or buses from the airport and the railway station.

Tourist Information
Accommodations are available for the incoming tourists in the Government tourist lodges, hotels and resorts, located close to the sanctuary. Bird viewing, natural trail and photography are major tourist activities. The best places to spot different birds are in paddy field and dry grassland areas. For information on entry timings, fee and accommodation facilities, the tourists can contact the authorities of the sanctuary.
