DRAWING AS A HOBBY (Class 7)
Drawing is a wonderful thing for children. It enables them to freely express their thoughts and
feelings. Before taking up drawing as a hobby children should first know the following facts
about drawing.
Different categories
There are different categories of drawing which include cartooning, figure drawing, shading and
doodling.
Different methods
There are different styles of drawing which include:
Sketching: it is basically a fast unrefined drawing.
Tracing: this is actually drawing on a translucent paper (e.g. tracing paper) around the
edges of pre-existing figures or characters that exhibit through the paper.
The surrealist technique of ectopic graphomania: in this style dots are created on a
blank paper and then lines are created between these dots.
Line drawing: these drawings are done by employing narrow lines only without using any
blocks of shading.
Shading: this drawing style refers to colouring or darkening of a diagram or an illustration
with parallel lines or a block of colour.
Stippling: in this style a decorative effect is created on paint or other materials by
coarsening or roughening its surfaces as long as the material is wet.
Outside the art
Outside the art, drawing is used in several other professional fields such as architecture,
circuitry, embroidery, machinery etc. Drawing artists are also employed by police or detectives
in drawing the portraits of criminal suspects.
Different equipment required
Following are some essential aids that one requires to take up drawing as a hobby:
Drawing table or board
Drafting tape (for securing the paper to drawing board)
Pencil and charcoals
Eraser and sharpener
Fixative (to avoid pencils from smudging)
Ruler
Set squares and circle compass
Drawing as a hobby is the first step to painting. Important lessons and skills such as subject
matter, balance, colour, and composition that one learns from drawing can be implemented in
painting. It is for this reason most painters first sketch on the canvas before applying paint.
