FAKIM WILDLIFE SANCTUARY

Fakim wildlife sanctuary is nestled in the Pungro circle headquarters in Nagaland. It lies in the vicinity of the Myanmar (Burma) international border. The sanctuary was setup in the year 1983.

Flora
Forest type: tropical to sub-tropical, Rhododendrons and bamboo forest.
Major tree species: Gamari, Oaks, Sasi, Alder, Uriam, Kachnar, Hollock, Nahor, Amari, Bogipoma, Khasi Pine, Bonsum, Canes, Orchids and medicinal herbs.

Fauna
Tiger, Barking Deer, Panther, Hoolock gibbons, Himalayan Bear, Jungle Cat, Bison, Slender Loris, Sambar, Wild Boar, etc.

Avian Fauna
Indian Horn Bill, Grey Pheasant, Green Pigeon, Tragopan Pheasant, Doves, Jungle Fowl, etc.

Getting there
Fakim wildlife sanctuary is linked with different parts of Nagaland through a good network of roadways. Guwahati airport in Assam is the closest airport to the sanctuary. Dimapur Airport is another closest aerodrome, about 73km from Kohima. From Guwahati one can easily reach Kohima, the capital state of Nagaland, through NH 39. Nearest railway terminal is situated at Dimapur. The nearest major town is Kiphire, about 98 km away.

Tourist Information
Tourists can find comfortable accommodation at the PWD Inspection Bungalow and Circuit House with prior reservation with the Directorate of Tourism stationed at Kohima. Fakim sanctuary is covered with high hills and ridges, narrow valleys and deep gorges. Tourists are advised to wear comfortable clothes and strong shoes with good grip while visiting this sanctuary.
The tourists have to obtain a special permission from the State Forest Department for entering the sanctuary. Only visitors with an authentic Inner Limit Permit are allowed to venture inside the restricted areas of the reserve. Avoid coming during the months of June-July (monsoon months) as travelling through the wildlife sanctuary during this period becomes quite difficult.
