GANDHI SAGAR WILDLIFE SANCTUARY

Gandhi Sagar wildlife sanctuary is situated on the bank of river Chambal in the Gandhi Sagar village in Madhya Pradesh’s border districts of Neemuch and Mandsaur at the Rajasthan border. The sanctuary is divided in two parts by the river Chambal - one part is in Neemuch district and the other is in Mandsaur district. It was declared a wildlife sanctuary in 1974. It is India’s only Vulture conservation area and many extinct vulture species can be sighted here.

Flora Vegetation type: mixed, dry and deciduous forest along with patches of flat grasslands. Important trees: Salai, khair, dhawada, palas, moyan, ber, tendu, mahua and khardhai.

Fauna Leopard, bear, chinkara , blue bull, wild dog, wild boar, fox, crocodile, otter, etc.

Flora
Vulture, peafowl, jungle fowl, koel and many other local and migratory bird species.

Reaching There
Udaipur Interstate Airport, about 220km away from Gandhi Sagar wildlife sanctuary is the closest airport. The nearest railway terminals are at Bhawnimandi, (45 km), Shamgarh (85 km) and Jhalawar (53 km). Best major bus terminals are at Neemuch (100 km), Mandsaur (135 km) and Kota (100 km).

Tourist Information
Tourists can find quality accommodation at the rest house and circuit house of the Water Resource Dept., located within the sanctuary. Rest house of the M.P.E.B also offers comfortable staying option. Tourists can contact the S.D.O. M.P.E.B., Gandhi Sagar, Mandsaur and the S.D.O. Water Resource Dept. Gandhi Sagar, Mandsaur for reservation of accommodation.
Safari ride, nature trail and nature photography are popular pastimes of the incoming visitors to the sanctuary. The forest authority does not provide any vehicle for the safari rides. Hence the visitors have to hire their own vehicles from outside. Diesel or petrol vehicles that are not more than five years old are allowed inside the sanctuary.
Gandhi Sagar dam, Bhadkaji rock paintings, Chaturbhujnath temple, Narsinghjhar, Taxakeshwar temple and Hinglajgarh Fort are some of the popular tourist spots in and around the sanctuary.
