GHATAPRABHA BIRD SANCTUARY

Ghataprabha Bird Sanctuary is situated near Kolhapur in the state of Karnataka. It is nestled around 28km of the Ghataprabha River. The wildlife sanctuary was gazette on 17 June, 1974. The sanctuary is bounded by agricultural fields.

Flora
Vegetation cover: marshy and swampy vegetation
Major trees: Babul, Indian thorny bamboo, Manilla tamarind, cogon grass, etc.

Fauna
Indian Pangolin, Jackal, Indian Porcupine, Indian Civet, Indian Pond Terrapin, Common Palm Civet, Monitor Lizard, Rat Snake, Saw-Scaled Viper, etc.

Avian Fauna
Important species: European White Stork and Demoiselle Crane.
Other species: Eurasian Spoonbill, Intermediate Egret, Little Cormorant, Eurasian Marsh Harrier, Cormorant, Darter, Black-headed Ibis, Red-wattled Lapwing, Brahminy Kite, Indian Pond Heron, Shikra, Barn Swallow, etc.

Getting There
The closest aerodromes to Ghataprabha Bird Sanctuary are at Belgaum (65km) and Bangalore. The nearest railheads are located at Ghataprabha (2km) and Gokak (10km). Ghataprabha sanctuary is located about 65km away from Nargund Road. Nearest major bus terminals are at Bangalore, Belgaum, Dharwad and Gokak.

Tourist information
Rest houses and other staying options are available in and around the sanctuary. Bird viewing, boating and nature trails are major tourist activities in the sanctuary. Carry mosquito repellants and necessary medicines if you intend to stay overnight. The boat rides are limited to 10 to 15 minutes per ride. Avoid making loud noise and moving around in the boat during your ride. Wear sun glasses, comfortable clothes with khaki or green shades and a proper hat as a protection against the sun’s heat. Always keep safe distance from the wild animals.
