GOBIND SAGAR WILDLIFE SANCTUARY

Gobind Sagar Wildlife Sanctuary is situated in Himachal Pradesh along the banks of the Gobind Sagar Lake, which in turn was developed after the Bhakra Nangal Dam (India’s largest dam) was constructed across the Sutlej River. It is about 35 km away from Una and around 83 km away from Anandpur Sahib. It was established as a wildlife sanctuary first on 5 December 1962 and then again finally on 29 March 1974. At present, Gobind Sagar sanctuary is under the management of the Bhakra Management Board.

Land animals: Sambhar, barking deer, wild boar, etc.
Aquatic species: Chilwa, Catla, Singhara, Jhalli, Mrigal, Misror crap, Grass crap, Silver crap, Topra and Gid.

Avian fauna
Red jungle fowl, peafowl, swallow, owl, etc

How To Get There
Gobind Sagar Wildlife Sanctuary can be easily approached from Bilaspur which is about 135 away. The nearest airports are at Bhuntar and Chandigarh which are about 131 km and 135 km away from Bilaspur respectively. The closest narrow gauge railhead is at Shimla and the closest broad gauge railway station is at Kiratpur Sahib. Bilaspur can be easily accessed by road from Chandigarh and Shimla.

Tourist Information
Different staying options are available for the tourists in and around Gobind Sagar sanctuary. Gobind Sagar Lake is an ideal spot to sight different species of animals and birds. Permission for fishing in the Gobind Sagar Lake can be secured from the department of fisheries at Bilaspur. The Department of Tourism and Civil Aviation organizes numerous water sports activities on the Lake in the months of October and November. Even the tourists can participate and enjoy water-scooter racing, sailing, water-skiing and Kayaking in the waters of Gobind Sagar.
The Naina Devi temple is an important nearby religious centre and tourist destination that is linked to the wildlife sanctuary through a ropeway, overlooking Gobind Sagar Lake.
