GREAT INDIAN BUSTARD SANCTUARY

Great Indian Bustard Sanctuary was established in the year 1979 to protect the population of Great Indian Bustard in the state. It is located at Solapur in Maharashtra. The sanctuary is also referred to as the Jawaharlal Nehru Bustard Sanctuary.

Wildlife
Great Indian Bustard is the flagship species in the region. As per the 2009 census of the bustards, there are nearly 21 bustards in the sanctuary (8 males and 13 females). The other avian fauna species in the Jawaharlal Nehru Bustard Sanctuary are Yellow-wattled Lapwing, Indian Bushlark, Grey Francolin, White-eyed Buzzard, Ashy-crowned Sparrow-lark, Barred Buttonquail, Red-necked Falcon, Indian Silverbill, Pied Bushchat, Large Grey Babbler, Common Myna, etc.

Fauna
Some of the fauna species of the sanctuary include wolf, snake, Indian Fox, striped hyena, blackbucks, chinkara, etc.

Getting There
The nearest railway terminal to Great Indian Bustard Sanctuary is the Sidheswar Junction, located about 1 km away.
Sholapur airport located about 5 km away is the closest airport to the sanctuary.

Tourist Information
Accommodation inside the park is very scanty. The visitors can stay in the Forest Department rest house with advance booking.
No vehicles are allowed inside the park. Viewing huts and watch towers within the sanctuary are the best way to view the wildlife. Late afternoon and early morning are the best time to spot the great Indian bustards and the blackbucks.
