Guindy National Park is the eighth smallest national park of the country. It covers an area of only
2.82 km 2 . The park is amongst the few national parks in Indian that are located within a city.
About the park
The park is located in Chennai, in the state of Tamil Nadu. It is basically an extension of the grounds
that encircles the Raj Bhavan, the official dwelling of the Governor of Tamil Nadu. The park was
originally a hunting reserve of Gilbert Rodericks, an eminent Britisher. About 22 acres of the park
towards the northeast corner has been carved out as Children's Park.
Fauna
The animals that you can find in this national park are blackbuck, small Indian civet, jackal, bonnet
macaque, common palm civet, pangolin, hedgehog, three-striped palm squirrel, and black-napped
hare. The reptile species of the park include fan-throated lizard, Indian monitor lizard, star tortoise,
chameleons, geckos and saw-scaled viper.
Avian fauna
Crow pheasant, paradise fly-catcher, pariah kite, Honey Buzzard, golden-backed Woodpecker,
koel, robin, stone curlew, parakeet, blue-faced malkoha, red & yellow-wattled lapwing, drongo, etc.
are important bird species of the park.
Flora
Thorn forest and dry evergreen scrub are important forest covers of Guindy National Park. The
prominent trees of the park include Atlantia monophylla, Sugar-apple, Neem and Wood-apple.
Reaching there
Kasturibai Nagar MRTS station is the closest railway station. Guindy station is about 1 km away and
Chennai Central Railway station is almost 12 km away. The nearest airport is Chennai airport which is
about is 8 km away. The park is well connected with Chennai through regular state and private bus
services.
