HADAGARH WILDLIFE SANCTUARY

Hadagarh Wildlife Sanctuary is situated close to the Hadagarh reservoir of Salandi dam in Keonjhar and Mayurbhanj district of Odisha. It was established in the year 1978.

Flora
Forest cover: mixed deciduous forests
Major species: Sal, Indian gooseberry, mango tree, Indian mulberry, golden shower tree, arjuna, East Indian Ebony, bahera, garari, lodh tree, etc.

Fauna
Tiger, leopard, jungle cat, elephant, fishing cat, hyena, pangolin, muggar crocodiles and langur.

Avian Fauna
Indian shag, Indian pond-heron, little grebe, great cormorant, Asian Openbill-stork, cattle egret, changeable hawk- eagle, peregrine falcon, black ibis, emerald dove, etc.

Getting there
The nearest airport and the nearest major railway terminal to Hadagarh Wildlife Sanctuary are located in Bhubaneswar, which is about 160 km away. The sanctuary is located on NH-5 and can be easily approached from Bhubaneswar, Rourkela and Bhadrak.

Tourist Information
Accommodation can be availed at Salandi Nilaya at Hadagarh with prior booking. Bird watching, nature trail and nature walk are major tourist pastimes here. Carry a powerful binocular and a good bird guide book while going for bird viewing.
The ideal places to spot the wildlife are near the wetlands of the sanctuary which include river Salandi and the perennial streams which include Ghagara stream, Pitanau stream and Mukta stream. The Salandi dam is the best place to sight the muggar or fresh water crocodiles. View the wild animals from a safe distance and avoid trying to feed, distract or agitate them in any manner. Picnic, making loud noise, drinking alcohol, littering and swimming in the streams of the reserve are strictly prohibited. Always be careful and remain alert during your expedition to the sanctuary.
