HALIDAY ISLAND WILDLIFE SANCTUARY
Haliday Island Wildlife Sanctuary, also referred to as Halliday Island, is nestled in the deltaic region
of West Bengal. It is one of the three Wildlife Sanctuaries of the Sundarbans Biosphere Reserve. The
other two Wildlife Sanctuaries are - Lothian Wildlife Sanctuary and Sajnekhali Wild Life Sanctuary.
Halliday Sanctuary is located on the Matla River, near the confluence of the Bay of Bengal. The
sanctuary was gazetted in June, 1976.
Flora
Flora Type: mostly tropical evergreen coastal mangrove
Major species: Mangrove Date Palm, Mangrove Apple, White Mangrove, etc
Fauna
Wild Boar, Rhesus Macaque, Barking Deer, Estuarine Crocodiles, Sea Turtles And Spotted Deer; Royal
Bengal Tigers Visits the sanctuary occasionally.
Avian Fauna
Jungle Babblers, Marsh Harriers, Bulbul, Jungle Fowl, etc
How to Reach There
Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose International Airport in Kolkata is the nearest airport. Canning Railway
station is the closest railhead. There are no roadways to reach Haliday Island Wildlife Sanctuary.
However one can hire boat or ship from Sajnekhali to reach the wildlife sanctuary.
Tourist Information
Sajnekhali Tourist Lodge, which is under the management of West Bengal Tourism Department, offer
quality staying facility with prior booking. Other accommodation options are also available for the
tourists around the sanctuary. Littering in the sanctuary is strictly prohibited. So bring back all your
wastages to dispose them properly at the appointed places. Valid permit is required for entering the
wildlife sanctuary. Guard services are available at the Sajnekhali check point. Boat safaris are the
only way to access the park.
Avoid making noises while spotting the wild animals. This can disturb or scare them. Carrying pets,
fire arms, weapons, alcoholic drinks, loud speakers and transistors inside the sanctuary are not
allowed. Always stay close to your group and your guide, so that you do not get lost.
Lothian Wildlife Sanctuary and Sajnekhali Wild Life Sanctuary are the other nearby tourist
destinations that they can visit during their trip to Halliday Island.
