HAZARIBAGH WILDLIFE SANCTUARY

Hazaribagh wildlife sanctuary is situated in the state of Jharkhand on NH 33, about 91 km away from Ranchi. It was established in the year 1955 and is a part of the Chotanagpur plateau.

Flora
Vegetation cover: Grass meadows and thick tropical forests.
Trees: Sal.

Fauna
Tiger (about 14 as per 1991 tiger census), sambar, panther, leopard, wild boar, monkeys, muntjac, nilgai, mouse deer, sloth bear, porcupine, chital, etc.
The sanctuary is believed to have the largest population of sambar than any other wildlife sanctuary of similar size in the country.

Getting There
The closest train terminal to the sanctuary is at Koderma (about 59 km away). Ranchi airport is the closest airport to Hazaribagh wildlife sanctuary. Nearest bus terminal is located in Ranchi. The sanctuary can also be easily accessed from Gaya, Patna and Dhanbad.

Tourist Information
Cottages, a tourist lodge with a canteen and a forest rest house, located inside the sanctuary, offer comfortable lodging facilities to the visitors.
The core area of the forest is not open for the general public. Waterholes are the ideal place to spot different animals. The best place to view the wildlife in their natural habitat is from the watch towers.
Jeep safari is a popular tourist activity here. Tourists can hire cycle rickshaw, rickshaws or taxis for a ride inside sanctuary. Obviously, proper permission has to be obtained from the forest officials for the same.
Suraj Kund Hot Spring, Rajrappa Falls, Canary Hills and Hazaribagh Lake are some of the popular tourist spots that are located in the vicinity of the sanctuary.
