IDUKKI WILDLIFE SANCTUARY
Idukki wildlife sanctuary is situated in the Thodupuzha and Udumpanchola taluks of the Idukki district in
Kerala. It was established in the year 1976 and was declared a wildlife sanctuary in the year 1984. The
sanctuary is bound on three sides by Idukki Lake which is created as a result of three dams- Kulamavu,
Idukki and Cheruthoni. In India the reserve is the second home to the endangered Giant Grizzled
Squirrel.
Flora
Forests type: Semi evergreen forests, west coast tropical evergreen forests, wet deciduous forests, grass lands and hill shoals.
Flora species: Rosewood, nelli, white pine, chandanam, teak, puli, konna, velvelam, karivelam, kallimul, bhadraksam, neelakurunji, etc.
Fauna
Flagship species: Giant Grizzled Squirrel and elephants.
Mammals: tiger, bison, sambar deer, jungle cats, Malabar Gaint Squirrel, wild boar, Cobra, Krait, Viper, etc.
Avian Fauna
Myna, black bulbul, king fisher, laughing thrush, wood pecker, etc.
Reaching there
Nearest airport is at Nedumbassery about 120 km away and the closest railway station is at Kottayam about 120 km away. Nearest major bus terminals are at Eranakulam and Kottayam about 115 km and 120 km away respectively. Kochi is around 58 km away from the forest.
Tourist information
Accomodation can be availed at Kerala State Electricity Board’s IB at Vazhathopu and at a dormitory at Vellappara. Many private hotels are also available at Kattappana, Cheruthoni and Thodupuzha. Natural trail, trekking, boating on the Idukki Lake and bird viewing are the major tourist activities in Idukki wildlife sanctuary. The best way to enjoy and experience the backwaters of the sanctuary is through houseboats.
Idukki Arch Dam (14th largest dam in Asia), Kizhakkilachimala Lake, History Museum and Hill Palace Museum (at Thripunithura) are popular tourist destinations around the sanctuary.
