ITANAGAR WILDLIFE SANCTUARY

Itanagar Wildlife Sanctuary is located at Naharlagun at the Papum-pare District of Arunachal Pradesh. It is regarded as an ideal place for the wildlife lovers and nature seekers. Notification : Wildlife Sanctuary in 1978.

Flora
Wet evergreen forests, tropical semi evergreen forests, tropical grassland and alpine scrub are the endemic vegetation cover of the region. Aman, Khokan, Makrisal, Poma, Sopa, Hingori, Makrisal and Bamboo are prominent tree species of the sanctuary. The sanctuary is also home to different varieties of orchids.

Fauna
Barking Deer, Tigers, Sambar, Elephants, Panther, Sloth Bear, Red Panda, etc.

Avian Fauna
Hornbills and many others are found here.

Getting there
The nearby railway station is at Harmuty. The nearest airport is at Lilabari. Regular daily Pawan Hans Helicopter services between Itanagar and Guwahati are also provided for the tourists. Itanagar is well linked by taxi and bus services with Tezpur, Guwahati and other district headquarters of Arunachal Pradesh.

Tourist information
Itanagar Wildlife Sanctuary has three rest houses that offer comfortable accommodation facilities. More lodging options of different budget are available in the nearby town of Itanagar. The Zoological Park, Social Forestry Division and Directorate of Fisheries, the Ganga Lake, State Forest Research Institution, the Ita Fort and the State Museum are some major tourist spots in and around the sanctuary. Entry permit for entering the sanctuary has to be obtained from the Deputy Chief Wildlife Warden, stationed at Naharlagun.
Since the region is in the hilly terrain, tourists are advised to wear strong boots and comfortable khaki dresses with olive or dark green shades. Driving inside the wildlife sanctuary before sunrise and after sunset is prohibited. The visitors are also advised not to disturb the tranquility and serenity of the forests by any means. Stay calm and quiet during animal sightings.
