JAYAKWADI BIRD SANCTUARY – Maharashtra

Situated in the Paithan village, in the Ahmednagar and Aurangabad districts of Maharashtra, Jayakwadi bird sanctuary is a perfect paradise for the birdwatchers. It was notified a wildlife sanctuary in 1986. The Jaikwadi dam (also called Paithan dam), constructed in 1973 over the sacred river Godavari, is the chief source of water supply for the biodiversity of the Jayakwadi sanctuary.

Flora
Vegetation type: aquatic vegetation Major species: Chara, Spyrogyra, Hydrilla, Ipomea Fistulosa, Potamogeton, Argemone Maxicana, Vallisneria etc.

Avian Fauna
Flamingos, Domicile Cranes, Pochards Teals, Brahmany Duck, Pintails, Shovellar, Wigeon, Glossy Ibis, God Wit, etc.

Getting There
The closest railway terminal and aerodrome are located about 50km away at Aurangabad. The incoming visitors can easily hire bus, car or taxi from these terminals to reach the sanctuary. The closest bus stand is at Paithan (Jaikwadi).

Tourist Information
Limited accommodation is available at the rest houses at Paithan and Aurangabad. Prior booking has to be done for the same with the Asst. Conservator of Forests, Jaikawadi. More staying options are available at Aurangabad or Paithan.
Sant Gyaneshwar, a large garden, located inside the sanctuary and believed to be Maharashtra’s largest garden, is an ideal picnic spot. It houses swimming pool, wet land for boating, children's play area, musical fountains, beautiful lawns and numerous flowerbeds and trees.
Bird watching, nature trail, boating and nature photography are the major tourist activities here. It is advisable to wear light cotton clothes with khaki or olive shades that will enable you to blend easily with the forest surrounding. Carry proper binoculars and maintain silence while viewing birds. Carry water and food while visiting the sanctuary.
