KAIMUR WILDLIFE SANCTUARY
Kaimur wildlife sanctuary is located near Bhabhua in Bihar along the Uttar Pradesh-Bihar border. It is
situated along the Kaimur hills range and is believed to be the largest natural reserve in the state. It was
established in the year 1978.
Flora
Vegetation covers: deciduous forest, swampy marshes and mosaic grassland.
Plants and trees: Indian rosewood, sal, teak, salai, mahua, jamun, jheengar, koraiya, siddha, etc.
Fauna
Tigers, wild boars, panthers, sloth bear, chitals, sambar deer, nilgai, hyenas, four-horned antelope, sloth
bears, karakal, etc.
Avian Fauna
Peaf owl, Paradisefly, Falcon, Kites, Greater Spotted Eagle, White-fronted Goose, Imperial Eagle,
Ferruginous Duck, Blue jay, Dronge, Pied Hornbill and many more.
Getting there
The nearest airport and railway station are located about 100km away at Varanasi. By road Kaimur
wildlife sanctuary can be easily accessed from Mirzapur (nearly 100km) and Varanasi.
Tourist Information
The incoming visitors can stay in the Forest Rest Houses in Mahuwaria, Harrah and Churk. Tourist Hut at
Mahuwaria can also be availed for accommodation with prior booking with the Sub-Forest Conservator
stationed at Mirzapur. Many other lodges and hotels with basic amenities are also available for
accommodation.
The echo valley and the ancient rock paintings are places worth visiting within the sanctuary. Anupam
Lake, Telhar and Karkat Waterfall are other famous tourist spots situated in the proximity of Kaimur
sanctuary The tourists can also visit the nature centre of the sanctuary that houses huge collection of
vegetation, animals, birds and herbs.
