KALATOP KHAJJIAR WILDLIFE SANCTUARY
Kalatop Khajjiar Wildlife Sanctuary is situated in the state of Himachal Pradesh in the catchment
area of the River Ravi. It is nestled along the Himalayan mountain ranges and is also popularly called
Kalatop Wildlife Sanctuary. It was set-up in the year 1958.
Flora
Green oak, fir, blue pine, deodar tree, rhododendron, etc.
Fauna
Bear, Himalayan black marten deer, leopard, barking goral, langur, jackal, squirrel serow, etc.
Avian Fauna
Black Headed Jay, White winged Black Bird, Eurasian Jay, Black Headed Jay, Grey Headed Cannery
Flycatcher, Chestnut Billed Rock Thrush and others.
Getting there
Gaggal airport in Kangra, almost 18km away, is the closest airport. The nearest railhead is in
Pathankot, about 120km away. Tourists can hire buses or taxis from Chamba (about 24km),
Dalhousie (26km), Kangra and Pathankot to reach Kalatop Khajjiar Wildlife Sanctuary.
Tourist Information
Forest rest houses offer comfortable stay for the incoming visitors amidst the beautiful Himalayan
surroundings. Khajjiar Lake (also referred to as Mini Switzerland), situated within the sanctuary, is an
ideal location to spot numerous migratory birds.
The best way to view wildlife and birds of the sanctuary is by trekking through the forest reserve.
While exploring the sanctuary keep intact the natural integrity of the forest. Do not tease or disturb,
in any way, the wild animals and the birds.
Prior approval from the Forestry Department in Chamba is required for driving within the sanctuary.
