KARERA WILDLIFE SANCTUARY
Karera Wildlife Sanctuary is located on the Jhansi-Shivpuri main road in the state of Madhya Pradesh
about 55km away from Shivpuri town. The sanctuary is believed to be the last habitat of the Great
Indian bustards.

Flora
Acacia, mixed deciduous forest and swamp and riverine vegetations.
Fauna
Flagship species: blackbuck
Other species: tiger, elephant, leopard, wild cat, chital, wild boar, hyena and monkey.
Avian Fauna
Flagship species: Great Indian bustard
Other species: black-bellied river terns, gadwalls, egrets, teats, pintails, spoonbills, Indian robins, herons,
etc.
Karera sanctuary is one of the few sanctuaries in the world where all the three species of bustards,
namely Indian bustard, bearded bustard and coloured bustard, are found.
Getting there
The closest airport to Karera Wildlife Sanctuary is at Gwalior (170km away). Nearest bus terminals are
at Karera and Shivpuri. The nearby railway station is at Jhansi. One can easily get cab and private cars
from the airport and the railway stations to reach the sanctuary.
Tourist Information
Forest Department Guest house, hotel of the Madhya Pradesh Tourism Development Corporation and
Gangotri Bhawan at Bhopal offer quality accommodation to the tourists.
Petrol or diesel four wheelers that are not more than five years old can be used for safari rides inside the
sanctuary. Dihaita Jheel located within the sanctuary is the ideal place to spot numerous migratory
birds. The Jhansi Fort, Madhav National Park, Shivpuri town, etc. are popular places of interest located
in the vicinity of Karera sanctuary.
