KARLAPAT WILDLIFE SANCTUARY

Karlapat Wildlife Sanctuary is located in Northern part of Odisha on the west and east of Salandi River, a chief tributary of the Baitarani River. It was established in the year 1978.

Flora
Forest type: mostly mixed deciduous forests and scrublands.
Major species: Indian gooseberry, garari, olden shower tree, Indian mulberry, Indian Laurel, Symplocos Bark, axlewood, charoli, Bahera, myrobalan, chiraunji, Indian rosewood, crepe myrtle, kadam, etc.

Fauna
Leopard, tiger, jungle cat, elephant, langur, fishing cat, hyena and pangolin.

Avian Fauna
Little Grebe, Great Cormorant, Indian Shag, Cattle Egret, Indian Pond-Heron, Peregrine Falcon, Asian Openbill- Stork, Changeable Hawk-Eagle, Black Ibis, Emerald Dove, etc.

Tourist Information
Accommodation can be availed at Salandi Nilaya at Hadagarh with prior booking. Carry mosquito repellants if you intend to stay overnight. The topography of Karlapat Wildlife Sanctuary is undulated with steep hills and slopes. Hence wear comfortable clothes and powerful shoes with good grip to travel through the forest with minimum hassle.
The water bodies within the sanctuary which include the Salandi River, Ghagara stream, Pitanau stream and Mukta stream are the best places to sight the wild animals and the birds. Carry a powerful binocular and a bird guide book while going for bird viewing expedition. The Salandi dam is the perfect place to spot the muggar crocodiles. Always view the wild animals from a safe distance and avoid feeding, teasing or agitating them.
