KEN GHARIYAL SANCTUARY
Ken Ghariyal Sanctuary is nestled at the confluence of Khudar and Ken Rivers in the state of Madhya
Pradesh. It is named after the Ken River. Established in the year 1985, the sanctuary today is an
important habitat for the gharials.
Flora
Trees: Sal, teak, Saja, Haldina cordifloia, Lagerstroemia parviflora, Amaltas, etc.
Medicinal plants: Serpentina, Rauviofia, Swertia Chirayita, Cyprus rotundus, Tribulus terrestres, etc.
Fauna
Flagship species: Gavial or Indian Gharial
Other species: Cheetal, Wild Boar, Chinkara, Nilgai, Fox, Spotted Deers, etc.
Avian Fauna
Peacock, Shaheen Falcon, owl, jungle fowl, eagle, etc.
Getting there
Khajuraho town, about 20km, is the closest major transport centre to Ken Ghariyal Sanctuary. From
here one can easily get buses, taxis or private vehicles to reach the sanctuary. The nearest railway
stations are at Satna (about 150km) and Jhansi (about 220km). The closest airport is at Khajuraho,
approximately 25km away. From the airport, tourists can hire taxis to reach the Ghariyal Sanctuary.
Tourist Information
The visitors can avail accommodation at the rest houses and forest guest house located around the
forest reserve. Guide service is mandatory for every jungle excursion. Guides not only ensure your safety
but make sure that you comply with all the rules of the sanctuary and provide important information
about the gharial sanctuary. The visitors can take their own vehicles inside the forest reserve in turn for
a nominal fee for vehicle entrance.
Panna National Park, Khajuraho temples, Raneh water fall site, etc are some of the popular tourist spots
located in the proximity of the sanctuary.
