KHALASUNI WILDLIFE SANCTUARY
Khalasuni Wildlife Sanctuary is situated in the Rairakhol sub-division of the Sambalpur district in the
state of Odisha. It is situated at a distance of about 12 km from Bhawanipatna. It was notified a wildlife
sanctuary on 7 th January, 1982.
Flora
Vegetation type: tropical dry and moist deciduous forests
Major species: Asan, Sal, Piasal, Bamboo, etc.
Fauna
Leopard, Sambhal, Tiger, Mouse Deer, Wild Dog, Barking Deer, Nilgai, Gaur, Elephant, Bison, etc.
Avian Fauna
Red Jungle Fowl, Peafowl, Hornbill, etc.
Getting there
The closest railway station to Khalasuni Wildlife Sanctuary is at Sambalpur, 50 km away. The nearest
airport is at Bhubaneshwar. Nearest bus terminals are located at Sambalpur, Deogarh (about 55 km),
Rairakhol (about 50 km) and Riamal.
Tourist Information
There are no accommodation facilities within the sanctuary. Due to threat of Maoists in the area,
reservations for the Forest Rest House at Belghar have been closed. However tourists can find quality
accommodation in the nearby villages and towns of Sambalpur, Deogarh and Riamal. Jeep safari, bird
watching and natural trails are major tourist activities in the sanctuary. Only vehicles which are not more
than five years are allowed inside the reserve. During safari rides, maintain safe distance from the wild
animals and do not try to feed, tease or disturb them in any way.
The tourists are expected to strictly abide by the rules and regulations of the sanctuary that are laid
down by the forest officials. Colossal fall at Phurli Jharan and the magnificent cascade at Patalaganga are
popular tourist spots near the sanctuary. Parts of the sanctuary have been developed as picnic spot by
the government. The tourists can contact the Divisional Forest Officer, Rairakhol Division, for other
information or arrangement.
