KISHANPUR WILDLIFE SANCTUARY
Kishanpur wildlife sanctuary is situated in Kishanpur in the state of Uttar Pradesh. It is a part of the
Dudhwa Tiger Reserve and located near Mailani. The sanctuary is nestled in the terai and bhabar tract
close to the Indo-Nepal border and is about 13 km away from Bhira town. It was notified as a wildlife
sanctuary in the year 1972.
Flora
Vegetation type: terai forests, arid tropical riverine forest, bhabar sal forest and patches of grasslands.
Major tree species: sal teak, ailanthus, etc.
Fauna
Flagship species: Tiger.
Other species: Swamp deer, leopards, hog deer, gharials, wild boars, crocodile, barking deer, pythons,
vipers, etc
Avian Fauna
Black headed orioles, treepies, grey tits, lesser florican, Bengal florican, colourful woodpeckers,
kingfishers, minivans, bulbuls, painted storks, etc.
Reaching there
The closest airport is at Lucknow, about 200 km away. The closest railway terminal is at Mailani, about 3
km away. One can also approach Kishanpur wildlife sanctuary through roadways from Bareilly, Lucknow
and Lakhimpur-Kheri.
Tourist Information
Tourists can find quality accommodations at the forest rest houses at Bhira, Kishanpur and Mailani, with
prior booking with the forest department. The best places to spot the wild animals are near the Jhadi Tal
and other wetlands of the sanctuary. Bird watching, elephant rides, jeep rides and nature trail are
popular tourist activities. Carrying fire arms, loud speakers or transistors, alcohol and pets inside the
sanctuary are strictly prohibited.
Dudhwa National Park, Surat Bhawan Palace, Frog Temple, etc are popular tourist spots located in the
vicinity of Kishanpur sanctuary. The visitors can also visit the sal forests, where the trees are about 70
feet tall and are more than 150 years old. These sal forests are perceived as one of the finest sal forests
in the country.
