KUGTI WILDLIFE SANCTUARY
Kugti Wildlife Sanctuary is located in the Chamba district of Himachal Pradesh. It was
established in the year 1962.
Flora
Vegetation cover: western mixed coniferous and moist deodar forest.
Herbs: Dhup, karu and certain medicinal herbs such as potish, chaora, bankakudi, etc.
Fauna
Flagship species: Himalayan Brown Bear and Himalayan Thar.
Other fauna: Ghoral, Brown Langur, Himalayan Yellow Throated Fox Ibex, Leopard, Musk
Marten, Indian Red Serow, etc.
In 2013 a snow leopard was sighted for the very first time in the sanctuary.
Avian Fauna
Red-vented Bul-Bul, Red-Billed Babbler, Great Hill Barbet, Jungle Babbler, Snow Cock, Greyhead
Bunting, Monal, Great Hill Barbet, etc.
Getting There
The nearest railway station and airport are located 209 km away at Pathankot in Punjab. From
Pathankot one can hire private vehicles to reach the sanctuary via Bharmur town.
Kugti wildlife sanctuary is well connected with parts of the country through well developed
network of roads including the famous Kugti Pass. The sanctuary can be easily approached from
Hadsar (about15 km), Bharmur (about 30 km) and Pathankot (about 200 km).
Tourist Information
Tourists can find comfortable accommodation in cottages, hotels and guest houses in Kugti,
Chamba, Bharmur and Hadsar with prior reservation.
This sanctuary is mountaineers’ and trekkers’ paradise, as it provides them access to the higher
altitudes of the Himalayas. Besides trekking, safari is also an important activity here for the
tourists. The spectacular trek to the Kugati village should be a part of every safari.
The sanctuary also houses a famous Manimahesh (Shiva) Temple which draws a large numbers
of pilgrims across the country every year.
