KUMARAKOM BIRD SANCTUARY
Kumarakom bird sanctuary is situated along the banks of Vembanad Lake at Kumarakom in Kottayam
district of Kerala. Also referred to as Vembanad Bird Sanctuary. It was initially developed as a rubber
plantation by Alfred George Baker, an Englishman, in 1840. Hence, formerly was called as Baker’s Estate.
Flora
Mostly mangrove and coconut groves forests with lilies blossoming during the spring.
Avian Fauna
Resident birds: Indian Darter, little cormorant, white ibis, herons, kingfishers, egrets, Brahminy kite, etc.
Migratory birds: Siberian cranes, lark, teal, flycatcher, darter, parrot, steppe eagle, etc.
Getting there
Nearest airport is the Cochin International Airport, about 94 km away. Closest railway terminal is located
around 13 km away at Kottayam. Buses, cars and taxis can be hired from these terminals to reach the
sanctuary.
Tourist information
Accommodation within Kumarakom bird sanctuary is very limited. Very few houseboats are available
for accommodation within the reserve. Backwater resort of KTDC (Kerala Tourism Development
Corporation) provides quality staying facilities near the sanctuary. However, there are plenty of staying
options at Kumarakom in the form of different budget hotels, resorts, houseboats and homestays.
Bird watching is the major tourist activity in this wetland bird sanctuary. For a unique bird viewing
experience it is advisable to hire a trained guide along with you. Also carry a powerful binocular or
camera and a bird guide book.
Maintain complete silence and avoid making any noise while viewing birds. Or else, the birds may fly off.
It is also a good idea to wear olive or dark green colour clothes so that you can easily blend with the
surrounding of the forest environment.
Nature trail and boating trips to the nearby Pathiramanal, Kaipuzha Muttu, Poothapandi Kayal,
Thollayiram Kayal and Narakathara are the other popular options for the tourists.
