KUMBHALGARH WILDLIFE SANCTUARY
Spread across the Udaipur, Pali and Rajsamand districts, Kumbhalgarh Wildlife Sanctuary is the only
habitat for wolves in Rajasthan. It is situated on Udaipur-Pali-Jodhpur road, about 65km away from
Udaipur City. The sanctuary is named after the famed Kumbhalgarh fort that is located inside the
sanctuary. Initially it used to be a hunting ground for the royals of Rajasthan.
Notification: Wildlife Sanctuary in 1971.
Flora
Kala siras, shisham, desi babool, amla, khair, kikar, havan and baans.
Fauna
Important species: Wolves (more than forty in number).
Other species: Leopards, Sambar, Hyena, Chinkara, Jungle cat, Chausingha, Jackal, Sloth bear, etc.
Avian Fauna
White breasted kingfisher, golden oriole, red spur owls, bulbul, grey pigeons, parakeets, grey jungle
fowl and others.
Getting there
Maharana Pratap Airport at Udaipur, about 84km away, is the closest airport. The nearest railway
station is at Falna. Nearest major transport centre is at Udaipur. From Udaipur the road route is:
Udaipur - Iswal (via NH-76) - Losingh Crossing - Barwarha – Auda – Kelwara - Kumbhalgarh Wildlife
Sanctuary.
Tourist Information
Accommodation facilities both in and outside the sanctuary are available for the visitors with prior
reservations. Trekking, jeep safaris, bird watching and silent nature walks are popular activities of
the tourists. The water holes within the forest reserve are the best places to spot wolves and many
colourful birds.
A famous 15th century Jain temple, Kumbhalgarh Fort and some places of historic importance are
popular tourist spots that the visitors can visit.
